Episode 34 Your Retirement Mindset – Part 3 Creating Contentment

Have you ever noticed that certain people seem to be content and in control all the time?  It seems as if stressful situations bounce off of them rather than knock them down.  Even in retirement they appear happy, joyful and free.  It’s never too late for you to have contentment in your life as well.

First, you need to start identifying what you want… and why you believe you will be happier if you have it. Will it really make you happy? Or will you just get it, have a temporary period of happiness, and then start desiring something else? After you identify your desires, the next step is to find out if they are YOUR desires or if you’ve been programmed to think you want them.

The good news is you have a choice. Happiness is a choice! You can learn to control your emotions so you can feel good NOW, no matter what’s going on in your life. I know, this sounds really hard. When things are going on around you that are painful or scary or stressful, it can be hard to find your footing and remember that there are things you can do to be happy in the moment while creating contentment for the longer term.

Today’s program was brought to you by Replay Fitness, Inc. offering life transition and retirement coaching services.

Your transition may be a job change, divorce, widowhood, empty nest or retirement.  If you’re ready to own your power, feel good again or develop your retirement mindset, for your best phase yet.  Please join our waitlist at [email protected] to be informed when new sessions are open.

Episode 32 Your Retirement Mindset-Part 1 Cultivating Community

Imagine, that you’re taking a break from checking your morning email when you notice the retirement countdown clock, at the corner of your desk.  The clock was a joke from one of your actively retired friends, 2 years earlier.  At this moment the clock reads, 665 Days, 7 Hours, 30 Minutes and 40 Seconds.  You’re suddenly in a state of panic.

Financially, you’re good to go.  All annuities are sufficiently funded, your Social Security strategy is in place, and your checking, savings and emergency fund accounts are just where you want them.  Dave Ramsey, Chris Hogan and Suze Orman would have no issues with you.  However, you’ve neglected to plan your transition from pre-retirement to post-retirement activities.  What are you going to do?  How are you going to feel the first morning after the giddiness of your retirement party has worn off and you wake up with freedom from your alarm clock, a morning commute or even a scheduled team meeting?  You are not alone.

On this podcast, we always provide opportunities to recognize and celebrate birthdays with our listeners by offering a fun story or fun birthday trivia.  Today’s birthday trivia is:  Noisemakers were used to scare away evil spirits and demons on someone’s birthday.

Episode 27 Confidence and The Lipstick Effect

Did you know that the number one benefit of wearing cosmetics is the feeling of confidence they provide?

Confidence has been described as an attribute that most people would love to possess.  Whether its confidence in someone else, to do something that would result in a positive outcome or self-confidence, where our own state of mind leads to feelings of well-being and belief in our own abilities.   In episode 21, our guest Olivia Jones, beauty consultant extraordinaire, told us that during times of distress, sales of cosmetics, cigarettes and alcohol increase.  I was intrigued by that statement and embarked on a bit of research.  Lo and behold, Olivia was correct.  There is a phenomenon called The Lipstick Effect.

I can personally attest to more online spending during the novel Corona virus pandemic.  I’ve purchased Cherries Jubilee lipstick from Avon, https://www.avon.com/myavon/lmj4000 Red Stiletto lipstick from Mary Kay, https://www.marykay.com/oajones as well as several packets of Nail Polish strips, from Color Street, www.colorstreet.com/JerriJeanHeywood

While researching the Lipstick Effect on the economy I stumbled upon a book, titled, Don’t Forget Your Lipstick, Girl: Sister to Sister Secrets of Gaining Confidence, Courage and Power by Dr. Marilou Ryder and Jessica Thompson, and bought that too!

Episode 26 Celebrating Reading & Writing with Librarian & Hula Dancer Sharon Schwerzel

We’re continuing our celebration of the love of reading and writing from National Book Lover’s Day on August 9th through National Author’s Day on November 1st.  Today it is my privilege to present my conversation with Sharon Schwerzel.

Sharon is a fourth generation Floridian who grew up in Tampa where she was able to run around barefoot, play on the nearby beaches, camp in parks and national forests before the modern-day camping and RV revolution, and she participated in the Girl Scouts. She earned her bachelor of science and Master of science degrees at Florida State University.  She taught chemistry at a local high school in Tallahassee, Florida and in the freshman program at Florida State.

Along the way Sharon found a summer job in the library at FSU and started off in a new direction, earning a Master of Science degree in Library Science at San Jose State University.  Later she’s worked at several well- known university libraries including Cornell University, Stanford University, Ohio State University and Florida State University.  In over 40 years in academic libraries she’s proud of her opportunity to teach, help create an online catalog, beta test science databases, see the growth of electronic journals and books, help design a library renovation, help move 2 libraries and be part of building a library.

Sharon’s interest in ethnic dance provided her with more opportunities to perform with 4 different dance groups and teach hula and exercise classes at various locations around Tallahassee.

An avid reader since childhood, Sharon has read mostly fiction, widely on the topics of business and psychology, and is now exploring her growing interest in Florida history.

Episode 25 Celebrating September

September has more to offer than Labor Day.

For those of us who are still working and the rest of you who can only remember your days of employment, the first Monday in September, which is Labor Day is/was a welcomed day to behold.  It’s the first national paid day off after a long spell since Independence Day in July.  Also, by Labor Day, football season for all levels, pros, college, high school and more are in full force.  Bringing with it tailgate parties, fans wearing team jerseys and other apparel representing their team of choice, socializing and most importantly celebrations.

Since the novel Corona virus COVID 19 and social distancing have entered our lives, we’ve had to modify our celebrations.  Luckily, September is loaded with days of observances that we can enjoy with or without others around.  Here are five of them, in chronological order for your consideration, although none are paid days off like Labor Day, one or two may spark your interest.

National Grandparents Day is always celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day.  This year it’s today, September 13th.. The purpose of the day is to honor grandparents, give them an opportunity to show love for their grandchildren and help children become aware of the strength, information, and guidance older people can offer.

9/18 – Bright Pink Lipstick Day is a fundraiser run by The Pink Hope Charity, in Australia, to bring awareness to breast and ovarian cancer.

9/21 – World Gratitude day is about being thankful and showing appreciation.

9/30 – National Women’s Health & Fitness Day focuses on the importance of regular physical activity and health awareness for women.

9/30 – International Podcast day celebrates the power of podcasting.

Episode 24 The Power of Milestone Divas to Never Surrender

Sharing enthusiasm for each other is always our focus.  While it may be difficult in this moment of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) happy days are possible.  In this episode we discuss having the power to never surrender.

Imagine you’ve participated in a competition with nine other contestants…When the results were revealed:

3rd place…was not you,

2nd place…was not you,

1st place…was not you.

What are the feelings you may have experienced?

Abject failure, devastating disappointment or momentary set-back?

There are lessons that can be learned from failures, disappointments and set-backs.  The primary lesson is to never surrender.

If you surrender to failure you stop learning and growing, which are not good options.  Milestone Divas never surrender.  When life’s challenges come our way, we face them head on, we embrace them but, we never…surrender!
