Which paid holiday off work do you or did you enjoy the most?
Why is that?
There are so many holidays for us to celebrate. Some are serious, some are religious, and some are just oh so festive, for us to spend time and money. In November a working person has the potential of 3 paid days off work. Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, and the Day after Thanksgiving. Even though they are somber observances, you can add a few extra days before or after and make November your season of relaxation and reflection.
As fun as that may be, you don’t have to wait for specific days on the calendar. You can follow the Cup of Glo mantra, “celebrate each day and spread happiness your way.” One way to do that may be to create your own day of observance. You can make it up and keep it as your secret, for as long as, you’re happy doing it. You can share your made-up holiday with as many people as you want and do it as often as you want. You can have Wacky Hat Wednesdays where you and a few friends meet for lunch on Wednesdays wearing the Wackiest hats ever. You could decide that the Monday before Thanksgiving is special for you. It doesn’t have to be rational in fact the sillier it is the more it is likely to be more fun!

The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines it as, able to maintain oneself without outside aid or capable of providing for one’s own needs.
We may encounter a situation or two in our lives with the need for help. Our requests may take many forms such as help with money to pay rent, help with babysitting after an emergency at work or help with a flat tire. Each of those requests seem quite benign, but you may find it difficult to ask for help for fear of being denied, even worse there’s the embarrassment of letting someone else know that you are not self-sufficient.
You will hear stories about Susie, Linda, and Sylvia. Each story is an extreme example of negative results associated with asking or giving help, in moments of need. Most of us would prefer to be self-sufficient in every way at all times. However, that is not what happens everyday. Rich politicians ask for your donations and your vote. Employers ask their employees to provide good customer service to help keep their businesses open. On the other hand, giving can fill your heart with joy and be a blessing to someone. Imagine volunteering at a food distribution center. Mentoring at-risk youth or spending time chatting with your elderly neighbor on a Sunday morning.
Lessons from the pandemic has taught us that going it alone is not sustainable for long periods of time. We humans need each other. You may need money, or a place to live. You may only need conversation or a hug. Whatever, you need on any given day, please know it is possible to be self-sufficient and ask for help when you need it.

COVID 19 really impacted our feelings of belongingness!
While we were able to ZOOM ourselves to video conferencing fatigue, nothing could replace the joy of face-to-face interactions. Especially, if touch was involved.
Who knew how much we would miss a personal greeting with a kiss on the cheek or a hug. Touch deprivation is a horrible thing!
On the other hand, when our world started to open again, we were flooded with gratitude over the ability to do simple things, such as meet a couple of friends for lunch or spend an afternoon with grandchildren.
What did you do the first time you left home after the lock down? Email me at [email protected] and let me know.
It’s amazing that a year ago we were watching professional tennis with no fans in the stands and now we can see packed stadiums for both college and professional football games. Many people are there for their individual love of football, yet others are there because of the warm feeling of belonging.

What is your “go to” song, that helps you to keep your enthusiasm flowing?
One of my favorite songs is, “Give Your Baby a Standing Ovation” by The Dells.
Whenever I need a little boost of energy, I go to my playlist and play this song for as many times as it takes to lift me up. This song came out in 1973. The same year that I graduated high school. Remember your high school years? Especially, senior prom, senior trip, and dates with your special boyfriend. Nostalgia is a beautiful thing.
Give Your Baby a Standing Ovation advises a man to honor the special woman in his life. Imagine the feeling of love and respect when your man stands up and applauds you. What a confidence boost, because you are amazing!
